Alternatives to Ritalin for the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Lunes 22 Septiembre 2008 - 21:57

ADHD children's parents usually know that Ritalin has secondary effects, but they believe that it is the only solution so the child keeps calm and can concentrate on a book. In this article I talk about some of the Ritalin’s side effects and I suggest some alternatives therapies to deal with hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder, as well as a mum’s testimonial that succeed in give her child a normal life thanks to the neurological reorganisation therapies.
I recommend you the article "Ritalin y sus efectos secundarios" (Ritalin and their side effects) on the "En Buenas Manos“ blog, where it’s explain in detail what’s Ritalin, which are the indications and the most acute side effects. I quote some of the text:

“Ritalin derive from amphetamines”… “but the danger of the amphetamines are not limited to the drug dependency, cerebral injures and attention and memory problems. Also the metilphenidatum (Ritalin) can cause heart problems and other physiologic damages, like favouring liver cancer, although researches were limited to rats.”

And it’s said to have other side effects over the vascular system, gastrointestinal system, endocrine system, neurologic system. For example: “Central neurologic system: convulsions, confusion, agitation, anxiety, irritability, aggressiveness, nervousity, easy crying, hipersensivity, euphoria, emotional depression, insomnia, somnolence, humour disorders, psychosis with hallucination, compulsivity, psychotic depression and maniac, nervous gesture, tics, deteriorate of the ADHD symptoms.”

There are a lot of non aggressive therapies that can help to improve the ADHD symptoms:

Other article of the same blog,"El TDAH y remedios naturales (ADHD and natural remedies) a lot of non aggressive therapies are suggested to help ADHD children, like Bach flowers, Phototherapy, Vitamins and Oligoelements. Another article talks about suplements of Omega 3 and Omega6 fatty acids.

In the article "Niños Hiperactivos y juego al aire libre" (Hyperactive Children and outdoors playing) other remedies as simple as increase the contact with the nature are suggested:
“The hyperactive or attention deficit children improve a lot playing outdoors, avoiding, sometimes, intake too much medication”

Another blog, AlternativeTerapies, several therapies are suggested: Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Yoga.

Some researchers (see "El País“ journal article, for example), have found that the hyperactivity is a manifestation of an allergy or intolerance to certain food products, like additives (colorants, preservatives, etc) or to certain proteins that are found in milk, fish, eggs or wheat gluten. In these cases, the classic medicine, even if the doctor consider this possibility, it’s possible that they don’t find the allergy, because some intolerances or hypersensivities to certain food are not showed on a blood test. Other methods, like kinesiology, can detect an allergy even if it’s not positive in a blood test.

Other cause factors of ADHD are metal toxicity contamination.

I would like to add the testimonial from a mum that succeed to recover her child from hyperactivity with neurological reorganisation therapies like Doman, Sensorial Integration, RMT (rhythm movement therapy), auditory re-education of Berard method, musical therapy, visual therapy with behaviour optometrist and laterality re-organisation, and moreover homeopathy.

“The Padovan method can help a lot as well as all the neurological re-organisation therapies. They do it because we look for the stimulation of the neurological system, that we need to grow and the correct functioning.

Not only Padovan method is effective, also all this kind of therapies (Doman, Padovan, Sensorial Integration, RMT, auditory re-education and visual therapy). And I think that more than a therapy is usually need. It suppose a diary time during a lot of time (years in my case).

It’s said that ADHD has not cure, but I don’t agree. It’s possible that we don’t have a 100% recovering of our children, but we can not want them to be perfects, nobody is… but if they can have a normal life, like the children of the same age, with a good self-esteem and without school failure… and without any medication… for me that’s a big achievement”.

I recommend you to visit her blogs: ESTIMULACIÓN TREMPRANA Y DESARROLLO INFANTIL, ALTERNATIVAS PARA EL DESARROLLO INFANTIL, CBET-BRISBANE.

As this mum testimonial, sometimes we need a combination of several therapies to succeed in the cure. But this demands a lot of time and economical effort, but I think that it is worth. It’s too much easier to give Ritalin, but which solution is better for your child?
