The Keys for a successful child
Monday 8th September 2008 - 21:18
Usually parents believe wrongly that the felicity and professional success of their children is determined by their knowledge and the intellectual quotient (IQ). But the psychologists alert us that the most important thing is the emotional intelligence.
In Daniel Coleman’s book “Emotional Intelligence” define this concept as “set of skills like self-control, enthusiasm, perseverance and the capability of self-motivation”.
Thanks to the emotional intelligence a person can coexist with other persons and be respected by their mates, be the leader of a group, have a moral behaviour and get the best of their intelligence. With these abilities the professional and personal success are guaranteed.
Willian Sears says that the best ten attributes of a child are:
“
1. To be a child who forms meaningful relationships with others
2. To be empathetic and compassionate
3. To be kind and polite
4. To be smart
5. To be healthy
6. To make wise choices; to think and act morally
7. To have confidence
8. To have a healthy attitude towards sexuality
9. To communicate well
10. To have a joyful attitude
“
He explains in his book “The successful child” how to raise a child so he can get these abilities.
If you think about these abilities, where do you think they are going to get them? At school or at home? I would want most of all that parents notice that is not only important the academical education of a child, but even more the emotional education, and that is not done at school but at home.
And when do we have to begin teaching these qualities? Some parents wait until their children can talk and reason (the reason age arrives until they are 6 years old!) to teach education and moral. But from the birth day we can begin working in these qualities. How? First of all giving example. If we care and give love to a baby, and we do all the best (knowing that nobody is perfect!) he will learn to do the same.
And most of all, from the first moment that they get in touch with other children and communicate with them, towards the first or second year, in the park or with their siblings, we have to begin working the socializing qualities.
