A new study shows that one in four parents believes some vaccines can trigger autism.

The study is based on a survey of more than 1,500 parents that was conducted last year. About 12 percent of parents said they had refused to allow their children to receive a vaccine that a doctor recommended. 

Those parents tended to shy away from four vaccines: 

• Human papillomavirus vaccine, because of concerns about side effects
• Vaccine for meningococcal diseases, because of the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome, an immune system disorder
• The shot for measles, mumps and rubella, because of potential autism risk
• Chickenpox vaccine

Another study demonstrates the benefits of omega-3's in the treatment of autism. The study was small, involving 9 children given 1 gram of omega-3's per day for 12 weeks. A recent scientific study looking at Swedish children and their home environment may be one of the first to show a link between autism and an environmental chemical, according to a story in Environmental Health News.

The study did not set out to focus on autism, but scientists were surprised to find a link between children with autism and the presence of vinyl flooring in the child's home. Vinyl flooring emits phthalates.
